Holly Jackson Was Born In The Year 1992. She Grew Up In Buckinghamshire And Began Writing Stories At A Young Age, Finishing Her First (Poor) Attempt At A Book When She Was Fifteen.
‘a Good Girl’s Guide To Murder’ Is Ya’s Debut Novel And A Mystery Thriller. She Lives In London, And Her Hobbies Include Binge-watching Video Games And Pointing Out Grammatical Errors In Street Signs.
To Be Fair, This Was Not A Bad Book. But, For Very Specific Reasons, This Has Been My Favourite Ya Mystery Series Up To This Point. And, Unfortunately, I Believe That The Final Book In The Trilogy Has Completely Jumped The Shark.
Pip Is One Of The Reasons I Enjoy This Series. She’s Witty, Fearless, And Snarky, The Perfect Modern-day Nancy Drew. However, Not In This Book. She Is Angry And Traumatised Throughout This Book, And She Has Become My Least Favourite Trope Of All Time: A Pill-popping, Freaking Out, Paranoid, Therapy-is-not-for-me Female Narrator.
Of Course, What Happened To Her In The Previous Two Books Has Left Her Traumatised. Who Wouldn’t Be If This Were True? But I Don’t Always Want My Reading To Be Darker, Grittier, And More Realistic. One Of The Main Reasons I Read Is To Find Solace In Strong Characters That Can Kick Ass And Rise From The Ashes No Matter What Happens To Them. So The Fact That This Book Shat All Over Its Strong Female Protagonist Is A Huge Letdown.
My Other Issue Is The Absence Of Mystery. In Books 1 And 2, We Follow Pip As She Investigates, Interviews Suspects, Gathers Evidence, And Draws Conclusions. In Other Words, It’s Your Typical Nancy Drew Come To Life. However, In This Book, The Mystery Is Only A Small Part Of The Overall Story, And It Is Over Quickly, With Little Detecting.
So, What Is This Story About? The First 100 Pages Are Devoted To Pip Rage And Pill Popping. Then, Mercifully, We Get Into The Book’s Core Mystery, Which Is Wrapped Up Very Quickly By The End Of Part I. At That Point, The Book Takes A Turn That I Don’t Recognise For This Series Or Its Characters. It Was So Unexpected That I Was Stunned (And Not In A Good Way).
To Make Matters Worse, The Entirety Of Part Ii Is Self-evident. It’s Obvious What’s Going To Happen, And The Book Only Needs 200 Pages To Spell It Out In Detail. I Don’t Have To Have Surprise After Surprise In My Books, But I Don’t Like Reading Dozens Of Pages When Everything Can Only Go One Way.
Also, At The Risk Of Sounding Like An Old Fogey, I Don’t Think This Book Is Suitable For Ya. Yes, Books 1 And 2 Were Ya, But Not This One. Pip Skulks Around And Procures Drugs From The Neighbourhood Drug Dealer, Then Inhales Said Drugs To Take The Edge Off Her Trauma, Not To Mention What Happens In The Second Half Of The Book, Makes This One Of The Darkest Books I’ve Ever Read, Not Just In Ya.
If You’re Considering Reading This Series, I Still Recommend It, Particularly Books 1 And 2. Fortunately, Each Book Is Self-contained, With A Mystery That Is Resolved By The End. Each Subsequent Book Does Refer To What Happened In The Previous Ones, So Read Them In Order To Enjoy The Story Without Being Spoiled.
I’m Sure If The Other Two Books In This Series Didn’t Exist, I Would Have Enjoyed This And Found Very Little To Complain About. But They Do, And I Can’t Just Forget About Them. I Fell In Love With The Pip And The Mysteries Of Those Books, So This Book Was A Shock And A Disappointment In Comparison.

Personally, I Believe Jackson Is Not Through With Pip. There’s So Much More To The Story. I’m Hoping She Does A Maureen Johnson And Pulls A The Box In The Woods.
Pip Has Been Through A Lot By This Stage In The Series. This Isn’t Your Typical Ya Mystery Series. Pip Has Encountered Serious Threats And Has Not Escaped Unhurt.
She’s Suffering From Ptsd As A Result Of The Circumstances Of Her Most Recent Case. Her Emotional State Is Very Bleak. She’s Looking For Something Genuine.
Someone Is Bothering Her, Which Adds To Her Stress Since It’s Not Like All She’s Been Through Isn’t Enough.
While Pip Is Used To Trolls, As Is Anyone With A Visible Presence On The Internet, She Takes Special Note When One Troll Repeatedly Asks Her The Same Question: Who Will Look For You When You’re The One Who Disappears?
The Harassment Gradually Grows, And Pip Begins To Notice Items Around Her House That Indicate This Someone Is Nearby And Observing Her. She Will Undoubtedly Have A Stalker Before Long.
As Pip Investigates Who This Person Is, She Discovers Ties That May Connect Her Stalker To A Local Serial Killer Case That Was Supposedly Solved Six Years Ago. Is The Wrong Man In Jail? Is The Assassin Still On The Loose? Will Pip Be His Next Prey?
When The Police Refuse To Act On Her Behalf, Pip Does What She Does Best: She Conducts Her Own Investigation. Is She Finally Out Of Her Depth?
It Goes Without Saying That I Adore This Series. Pip Is One Of My Favourite Literary Characters, But She Is In A Completely Different Mindset In This Work.
Our Bright Baby Daughter, Who Had All The Optimism Of A Newborn Puppy, Is No Longer With Us. The World Has Beaten It Out Of Her. She Has Witnessed The Dark Side Of Humanity In A Manner That Few People Do.
I Truly Loved Seeing That Part Of Pip’s Mental Health Highlighted. So Many Times In Stories, The Heroes Go Through Harrowing Experiences And Then Seem To Recover. They Recover In Ways That The Rest Of Us Can Only Dream Of.
The Fact That Pip Is Struggling To Recover From Her Events Made Her Feel More Real To Me. You Can Truly Relate To Her Character.
The Tone Of This Narrative Is Significantly Darker Than The Other Two, And I Believe Some People Will Dislike It As A Result. It Felt Like The Natural Progression Of Pip’s Story To Me.
Pip Is Entirely Focused On The Task At Hand, Even To The Detriment Of Some Of Her Relationships, As She Always Is. I Was Worried About Her Connection With Ravi For A Time Because He’s Such A Sweetheart.
This One Didn’t Turn Out Quite As Well As I Had Hoped. There’s A Point In The Story When You Think It’s Over, But Then A Tremendous Twist Sends It Spinning Off In A Whole Different Direction.
After This, I’m Not Sure I Agree With Many Of Pip’s Choices, But Who Am I To Judge?
As Previously Stated, I Would Be Overjoyed If This Were Not The End. If It Is, I Appreciate Jackson’s Decision And Believe She Did An Excellent Job With This Series.
I Would Reread All Of These Books At Some Point. I Think Seeing Them Back-to-back Would Be A Lot Of Fun. If You Haven’t Read This Series Yet, You Should Do So Right Now. You Don’t Want To Miss Out!!
Absolutely Not! No Way, No How! This Should Not Be The End! Here’s My Somewhat Unpopular Review! I Wish I Could Rewrite The Second Half Of The Novel! Because It Irritates Me To See Pip Act Out Of Character, How The Plot Takes A Dark And Unexpected Turn, And How Everything Begin To Collapse Like Dominoes!
If You Read My Reviews For The First Two Novels, You Know I Am A Huge, Committed Fan Of The Series, And Dark, Twisty Turns Always Entice Me, But This Execution Didn’t Match With The Entire Installment. I Realise I Might Say Something Incoherent Because I’m Trying Not To Ruin Your Reading Experience.
I Have To Add That I Despised The Evolution Of Piper’s Character. That Dismal And Bleak Turn Of Events Did Not Sit Well With Me. I Was On The Verge Of Giving Two Stars, But I Added A Half Star For The Final Page And My Undying Love For Ravi! However, It Was Not The Finish I Had Hoped For, Nor Was It The Climax To My Highly Regarded Series!
I’m Going To Round It Up To Three Stars. Ravi And Pip Deserved So Much More That I Intend To Create My Own Fan Fiction Stars In Their Honour!
This Book Was Great And Perfect, And It Made Me Cry, And I Have No Words. There Isn’t A Single One. Yes, It Has Been Nearly Six Months Since I Read This, But The Last Time I Tried To Discuss It With A Buddy Who Also Read It, We Both Became Chaotic Messes Five Minutes Before School Started.
Finally, Holly Jackson Is Excellent. The Book Is Also Good. I Enjoy It, Yet It Makes Me Sad. Thank You For Attending My Tedx Lecture; Have A Wonderful Day.
